President Biden has signed into law a two-year extension to the existing Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). Without this extension, now to June 7, 2024, the existing program would have sunset in July of this year. This extension of the existing Act does not expand eligibility criteria, but does extend by two years the time to file under the current rules of the program.

Cold War Patriots joined a wide, bi-partisan coalition of affected communities, workers, and downwinders across many states to contribute to and successfully achieve this new legislation. Yet, as Senator Ben Lujan of New Mexico recently stated: “This fight is not over. The Federal government must do right by all Americans whose lives were impacted by radiation exposure in the national defense effort.”

Cold War Patriots will continue to work with Senator Lujan and Senator Crapo of Idaho, House and Senate members, and the President to deliver long overdue justice to all those across the nation who know the pain and sorrow caused by radiation exposure.

You can continue to make your voice heard by asking your House and Senate members to support legislation to further expand RECA eligibility to include all affected downwinders as well as post-1971 uranium mine workers.
