Grants, NM CWP Office Open House

Cold War Patriots Grants Office First Year

From Linda Warner

It seems like yesterday I was talked to about opening the CWP Office in Grants. Over the year we have done many things and I would like to tell you about them.

Our first was the Christmas Light Parade.  The CWP car had lights on it and a miner bear and reindeer on the roof.  We got to see a lot of smiling faces.

The Retiree’s Breakfast is a lot of fun because we are able to get together and talk with old friends. It is still going on about every three months so come join us. We will remind you when it is coming up.

The Resource Fair in Espanola was educational and enjoyable.  We got to talk and help a lot of people.

The Fourth of July Parade was big and we gave out lot of information and candy. We enjoyed driving the CWP car in that parade too.

The Fire and Ice Bike Rally was fun seeing a lot of people.  We gave out American Cool Wraps and enjoyed talking with some miners, millers and haulers. I learned a lot of thing about the mines I didn’t know.

A trip to Uravan, Colorado was great. It was like talking to those who lived in Anaconda.  When the mine closed down so did everything around them. But the people that worked and lived there still celebrate all the good times they had while the mining town was going.  It was a time I will remember for years to come. Thanks Uravan for having us there.

Next came a little mishap for me and a broken leg, but I still got to go to the town hall meeting in Grants.  Thanks to those who did the town hall meeting in Gallup, Espanola and Pecos. It’s wonderful to work with people who care.

The National Day of Remembrance was celebrated all over the United States.  In Grants we had a few good speeches, good food and great company.  The remembrance quilt project was started.  It is going to be a fabulous event and the quilts will be great.  If you haven’t signed a quilt square for you or a loved one, go to the CWP web site or come by the office Grants office and sign one.

Over the past year I have enjoyed people coming by the office, helping someone who calls and just being a part of the Cold War Patriots. I know that my father would be so happy at how far CWP has come.

We do have one more important event coming up.

This is your opportunity to express your support and solidarity for your Rocky Flat’s Brothers and Sisters.

On September 27, 2011  the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution designating October 30, 2011, as the National Day of Remembrance for uranium and nuclear workers who served their country during the Cold War Era.

The resolution was sponsored by U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)

“After World War II, hundreds of thousands of Americans went to work to build our nation’s nuclear arsenal and help us win the Cold War, and many were exposed to dangerous substances on the job, often without their knowledge,” said Senator Mark Udall. “I’ll continue fighting to get them the compensation they deserve, and I’m proud to recognize and thank them for their sacrifices.”

“There are thousands of Americans who defended our nation during the Cold War, who didn’t serve in the heat of battle but in the laboratory, where they worked with hazardous materials that were little understood at that time,” said Senator Alexander. “We should take the time to recognize their quiet sacrifice for our safety and freedom.”

Join us for a rally to commemorate this day and the contributions made by the thousands of nuclear workers who helped fight the cold war by creating the nuclear weapons arsenal during the Rocky Flat plant’s operation from 1952 through the clean-up phase that ended in 2005.
